Musing Mondays.

This week's question --
Coming towards the end of April, we’re a third of the way through the way through the year. What’s the favourite book you’ve read so far in 2009? What about your least favourite? (question courtesy of MizB)

Can you believe that we are nearly a third through the year, it's scary, the shops will have the Christmas cards in soon, (I hope not!)

My favourite books, read during the last few weeks , there are many but I've narrowed it down to two;

The Enchanted April by Elizabeth Von Armin. This book transported me to Italy. The descriptions and witty dialogue lifted my spirits on cold April days, a real treat for the senses.
My second choice is Black Diamonds by Catherine Bailey. A non fiction book, I don't normally choose these, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. As the book progressed the reader followed the fortunes and misfortunes of the Fitzwilliam family in Derbyshire. The Earl Fitzwilliam was a colliery owner and the book desribed the social conditions of the time. A very interesting book .

My least favourite book was Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry. Before buying this book I had read it's reviews and presumed I would enjoy it, but I found it depressing and offensive in places. Not a book I will reread.
More bookishness can be found here.

I haven't read any of your choices, but I'm sorry you didn't like The Secret Scripture. Enchanted April sounds wonderful though! :-) I love your blog btw!
I have not read any of those!

The only one of these I've read is Secret Scripture, which I did like. I agree it is depressing set against a background of politcal unest and religious conflict in Ireland. I liked the way Barry brought out the nature of memory and its function in our lives - the way Roseanne wondered what was real and what was fantasy as she looked back over her life.

I remember reading your post on Black Diamonds and thinking it sounds an interesting book and The Enchanted April sounds very uplifting and entertaining.

By the way thanks for your comments on my pet album. Lucy and George merely tolerated each other (George died a few years ago) and I think Lucy had the upper hand - we had her first (still have her but she's not too well at present - hyperthyroidism).
